As the impacts of climate change become increasingly visible across the world, the need for community-led action has never been more urgent.
Recent heatwaves across Europe have provided a stark reminder of the growing risks posed by extreme heat. Temperatures have reached record levels across several countries, contributing to more than 1,300 heat-related deaths in a matter of weeks. Scientists have warned that climate change is making heatwaves more frequent, more intense, and increasingly likely to occur earlier in the year. 
Here in Australia, particularly in Western Sydney, these challenges are not unfamiliar. Our communities already experience some of the highest temperatures in metropolitan Sydney, placing significant pressure on health, wellbeing, household finances, and essential services. Extreme heat is no longer a future concern—it is a present reality that disproportionately affects vulnerable members of our community. 
At Arab Council Australia, we are committed to ensuring that Arabic-speaking communities are active participants in shaping climate solutions. Through our Tabiea Climate Campaign, delivered in partnership with the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, we have been working with community members across Western and South-West Sydney to increase awareness of climate impacts, strengthen resilience, and create pathways for meaningful participation in climate action. 
Our recently developed Community Climate Action Plan reflects the voices, priorities, and aspirations of Arabic-speaking communities. It recognises that effective climate action must be inclusive, culturally responsive, and grounded in the lived experiences of local people. The plan highlights practical actions that individuals, organisations, and governments can take to build healthier, safer, and more resilient communities. 
Climate change presents significant challenges, but it also offers an opportunity for communities to come together, share knowledge, and lead positive change. The strength of our communities has always been found in our collective spirit, our willingness to support one another, and our commitment to future generations.
As Arab Council Australia continues to advance community-led climate action, we thank our partners, stakeholders and community members for their ongoing support and engagement. A recent example of this collective effort was our “The Heat Is On” Forum, which brought together community members, climate experts and local leaders to explore the challenges of extreme heat and identify practical ways to build resilience. Together, we can ensure that our communities are informed, prepared and empowered to respond to a changing climate while helping create a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
