Time to implement Anti-Racism Framework

As we mark the one-year anniversary of the National Anti-Racism Framework, we at Arab Council stand united with over 60 community organisations calling for decisive action from the Australian Government. A year ago, the Australian Human Rights Commission introduced this crucial framework: a national roadmap designed to eliminate racism across Australia. The framework offers 63 recommendations to address systemic racism that affects our justice system, education, health, media, and more.

Racism is not just about isolated incidents; it’s embedded in the systems that govern our lives. To combat this, we need more than words. We need comprehensive action, sustained efforts, and resources dedicated to dismantling these entrenched inequalities.

While we commend the government for initiating the National Anti-Racism Framework, the lack of progress in its resourcing and implementation is deeply concerning. Our country is facing rising racial tensions: anti-migration rallies, hate speech, and increased incidents of anti Arab, anti-Muslim, anti-Palestinian racism and anti-Semitism. These divisions challenge the very values of inclusion and respect that Australia stands for.

It is vital that the Australian Government move beyond the framework’s creation and take the next step: fully endorse, fund, and implement it. The first two recommendations, committing to the framework and establishing a National Anti-Racism Taskforce, must be prioritised. Only through such actions can we ensure that every Australian, especially our First Nations peoples, experiences racial justice in their daily lives.

Now is the moment for meaningful change. Let’s work together to build a future where dignity, equality, and justice are not just ideals, but a reality for all. We urge the government to take the necessary steps to make this vision a reality.

The statement was developed and convened by reputable organisations such as: the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS), Community Council for Australia (CCA), the Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia (FECCA), the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA), the Settlement Council of Australia (SCOA), and Settlement Services International (SSI).
