About
Musawat, “equality” in Arabic, is a program developed by Arab Council Australia for Arabic speaking communities. The Musawat Program promotes gender equality through and challenges gender-based violence. Developed through co-design and taking a strenghts based approach, Musawat aims to raise awareness about family and domestic violence, challenge gender stereotypes, and address issues surrounding coercive control—an area receiving increased attention, especially with the recent introduction of legislation in New South Wales.
The program has been running since 2019 and looks at the connection between gender inequality, and domestic and family violence.
Through workshops, seminars, and direct community outreach, Musawat encourages attitudinal change through open discussions about cultural norms around gender.
The project, of which this program is an essential part, is funded by Women NSW under their Domestic and Family Violence Innovation Fund.
