Sawa Buddy Program

The Sawa Buddy Program by Arab Council Australia, funded by the Community and Cohesion Support Program supports newly arrived people with conflict trauma from Palestine by connecting them with local Arabic speaking volunteers (Buddies) to assist them in integrating into their communities.

The program will operate in Southwestern and Western Sydney including the areas of Canterbury Bankstown, Fairfield, Liverpool, Parramatta, Cumberland, and Blacktown.

This program matches newcomers with local volunteer individuals and families, creating meaningful connections that offer friendship, guidance, and practical support as they settle into their new community.

Volunteers receive training, resources, and ongoing support from ACA, ensuring they are well-equipped to assist new arrivals effectively.

Program Activities

  • Weekly Parent/Children’s Groups: Regular social gatherings that provide family-friendly spaces for connection and community-building.
  • Group Events: Larger events designed to strengthen bonds within the community and foster a welcoming environment.

Key Program Benefits
Enhanced Social and Community Participation: The Buddy Program encourages newcomers to build relationships with local community members, offering them valuable opportunities to connect and engage.

Sense of Belonging and Improved Well-Being: The support of friendly, caring volunteers can create a sense of comfort and belonging, easing the transition to a new environment and promoting mental and emotional well-being.

Access to Information and Local Services: Volunteers help new arrivals navigate and understand local systems, including public services, healthcare, education, and legal aid, which may otherwise be challenging to access or understand.

Language Practice and Communication Skills: New arrivals can practice English in an informal setting with English-speaking volunteers, boosting their communication skills and confidence in everyday interactions.

Community Cohesion and Empowerment:

The program strengthens bonds within the broader community, encouraging resilience and unity among Australian Palestinians, Muslims, Arabs, and the wider community affected by conflict.

This cohesion builds a supportive network that new arrivals can rely on during their transition.
