On Sunday 21 October 2024, the Tabiea Picnic for Nature brought together a vibrant community of people in a shared celebration of culture, nature, and environmental awareness. The event, held as part of the broader Picnic for Nature initiative organised by the Nature Conservation Council NSW, was a resounding success.
With more than 40 adults and children in attendance, the event reflected the growing momentum of the Tabiea campaign and the spirit of climate justice.
The perfect Sydney spring weather beautifully showcased the scenic surroundings of Garrison Point, Georges Hall. Families, friends, and supporters gathered to enjoy the day and soak in the beauty of nature, creating an atmosphere that felt like a true community gathering.
One of the day’s highlights was the Walk and Talk Tour led by Uncle John and Aunty Liz, whose generous contribution to the event left a lasting impact. Their tour provided valuable insights into Aboriginal culture, as both adults and children were captivated by the knowledge shared about traditional tree scars, the use of nature as a resource, and natural remedies. The children were particularly excited, learning firsthand how deeply intertwined culture and nature are in Aboriginal heritage.
As the event progressed, guests mingled, shared stories, and engaged in meaningful conversations about some of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change, renewable energy, the Tabiea campaign, and climate justice. These conversations underscored the purpose of the day – to foster a sense of community around the cause of environmental conservation and justice for future generations.
A special thank you goes to Flower Power for their thoughtful contribution of seedlings, allowing families to take a piece of the event home with them and continue the cycle of growth and care for the environment. The seedlings symbolised both a personal and communal commitment to nurturing the planet.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to the Sydney Knitting Nannas and Friends who joined us, and to all our friends, with us on the day, and in spirit.
We also extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed food and fruit to share, reinforcing the spirit of generosity that flowed throughout the day. Also, a warm thank you to Zainab for the beautiful mural she painted, a lasting tribute to the Tabiea Picnic for Nature.
The Tabiea initiative, driven by the Nature Conservation Council NSW and Arab Council Australia, is making waves in the campaign for climate action and environmental justice in Western Sydney. Sunday's picnic was just one of over 30 events held across New South Wales as part of the Picnic for Nature weekend, all aimed at inspiring action and spreading awareness about the critical need for nature conservation and climate action.
As we reflect on the day, we’re reminded that it is through events like these that we not only celebrate the beauty of nature but also strengthen our collective resolve to protect it. A profound sense of community, culture, and care for the environment was present throughout the picnic, making it a memorable and inspiring day for all involved.
